Sunday September 7

Today is our last tour day here and tonight we fly to Istanbul. This is a very beautiful area with unique history. The people are wonderful and helpful and the food great. What else can one ask for?

We packed and went for breakfast, I had scrambled eggs today instead of omelette and that was a good choice. After breakfast, Biram came over shortly and we started to load our luggage and Erhan came to help load the luggage and then checked us out.

Our room ironically was called the Tandoor Room.

This was a great place to stay in and everyone was very helpful. Being able to have breakfast on the terrace surrounded by gorgeous scenery added to the charm.

Our flight is at 7:50 PM so we have a full day for further site seeing.

First stop was the Uçhisar Castle, another magnificent rock carved facility and quite sprawling

Next stop was Pigeon Valley. This is were pigeons where sheltered in pigeon house built in the rocks and their droppings were used for fertilizer.

Next stop was the Uçhisar Valley, a gorgeous Panorama view. Followed by the Love valley, named for the many rock formation that are typically facing each other.

We then stopped at the Çauvasin Village - very interesting and awe inspiring village chiseled out from from unique rock formations.

Lunch was at Kavi restaurant in Avanos. The restaurant was located by the Red river offering great views, good food and home made wine.

After lunch we drove through Urgup, which was largest town in Cappadocia, and also Biram's home town.

We then passed Deverant Valley from a level above. The camel could be distinguished but not Napoleon's hat.

Next stop was the Family rock, named due to the rock formation that look like pregnant mother, father, child, and the family's pet monkey.

Then came the Kale Acik Castle.

Arrived at the Nevsehir airport four hours ahead of schedule mostly because we had run out of things to see. Our guide Biram had tried desperately to get us interested in some more interesting stops to make including going to a modern day shopping mall but none of them can hold a candle to what we have seen so far, so we declined.

Biram got off near his house and the driver drove us on to the airport. We were running about 4 hours ahead of time.

The guard at the airport entrance was even surprised by how early we were.

The airport is very small and basic but quite clean and well maintained. I was surprised to see a couple of children under the age of ten inside complete with security badges. My guess is that their parents are probably some high ranking official at the airport and this was their Sunday afternoon treat.

As it turned out just before boarding time it was announced that flight was going to be 55 mins late due to bad weather conditions at Istanbul. So more waiting.

We finally pulled away from the gate at 9:00 PM. The flight wasn't very bad and sandwiches were served. It was only an hour and 15 min flight and landed around 10:20 PM.

Our luggage came within a reasonable time and we walked outside and found our escort to drive us to the hotel Harbyer Residence.

It took us about 50 mins to get to the hotel, and at first we were disappointed. It was half way down a very steep side road that had nondescript buildings and a construction site.

It was almost midnight when we checked in. There was only one person at the front desk and no one to help with luggage.

The room itself was nice enough but there wasn't the usual bottle of water waiting for us. It was too late to do anything much about it so we just retired for the night.

Ozkan from Turkey Travels had never gotten back to us on what time we were supposed to meet in the morning, so we tentatively decided to go down to breakfast at 8:30 am.

The bed was very comfortable and I slept soundly until the alarm, set for 6:30 am woke me up.
